MyTV Chairman Nasir Uddin Sathi shown arrested in extortion, threat case; bail denied
Sathi was earlier arrested on 17 August from the Gulshan area of the capital and placed on a five-day remand the following day
A Dhaka court has granted a petition to show the arrest of Nasir Uddin Sathi, chairman of the private television channel MyTV, in a case filed over allegations of extortion through threats of death and grievous injury to one of his female employees.
The court has also rejected his bail plea in the same case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra issued the orders on Wednesday (8 October) following a petition submitted by the complainant's side.
State counsel Md Harun-or-Rashid confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, on 19 January last year, the accused sent one of his female employees, Turjo Rezaul Kotha, on a trip to the United States. Upon her return 20 days later, Sathi summoned her to his office, where he allegedly made indecent advances. When she refused, he reportedly attempted to rape her. As the complainant tried to escape, other accused individuals allegedly restrained her.
She was then assaulted, threatened with death, and forced to sign 98 blank cheques and 9 non-judicial stamps worth Tk100 each.
In 2024, the victim filed a criminal case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka, naming Sathi and six others as accused.
Sathi was earlier arrested on 17 August from the Gulshan area of the capital and placed on a five-day remand the following day in connection with the murder case of Asadul Haque Babu under Jatrabari Police Station, linked to the anti-discrimination movement. He has remained in custody since.
