A Dhaka court has sent three individuals to jail in a case filed over extorting Tk10 lakh by posing as "coordinators" and promising exemption from charges in a July uprising case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order after rejecting their bail petitions at a hearing this afternoon (12 September), said police prosecution Sub-Inspector Atikur Rahman.
The accused are AHM Noman Reza, Tanzil Hossain, and Faria Akter Toma.
According to the case statement, they introduced themselves as student coordinators to carry out the extortion.
Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Abdul Malek Khan of Uttara West Police Station, the investigation officer in the case, produced the accused before the court and sought to keep them in custody.
In his plea, he stated that during interrogation, the three were found to be professional extortionists. Their identities and addresses could not be verified and other associates remain absconding, he added, stressing that their detention was necessary for proper investigation.
SI Atikur said, "Noman Reza was arrested at 12:50am near Airport Police Station. Based on his information, Tanzil Hossain and Faria Akter Toma were arrested at 3:40am from the Jasim Uddin area."
According to the case filed with Uttara West Police Station, around 1:10am on 11 September, the accused entered a residence on Road 6, Sector 13 of Uttara West and introduced themselves as coordinators. They allegedly told the plaintiff's brother-in-law, Delwar Hossain, that they could arrange exemption from a case related to the July Uprising case in exchange for Tk10 lakh.
