Five detained after child among four shot in Chattogram shooting
Followers of Morshed Khan reportedly opened fire and launched an attack with sharp weapons targeting rivals Abdus Sobhan and Shaukat
Police have detained five individuals following a violent turf war in the Bakalia area of Chattogram that left four people, including a 12-year-old boy, hospitalised.
The violence erupted at approximately 10:00pm yesterday (4 April) in the Maydar Mill area of Mia Khan Nagar, confirmed Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakalia Police Station Mohammad Solaiman.
"The attack was fueled by a long-standing dispute. We have detained five followers of [local criminal] Morshed Khan during our operations," the OC added.
He further said efforts were ongoing to arrest others involved in the incident. Names of the detainees, however, have not yet been released.
The four injured bystanders have been identified as Md Hasan, Jasim, Ismail Mia, and Fahim, 12,. They are currently receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Medical staff confirmed the victims sustained a combination of shotgun pellet wounds and injuries from sharp weapons.
According to police and eyewitnesses, followers of Morshed Khan opened fire and launched an attack with sharp weapons targeting rivals Abdus Sobhan and Shaukat.
However, instead of the intended targets, the victims were innocent bystanders: a pedestrian, a CNG-run autorickshaw driver, and an employee of a flour mill.
Police stated that Morshed Khan, a listed criminal by the city police, returned to the area after 5 August, 2024, following a long period abroad.
Upon his return, his rivals Sobhan and Shaukat reportedly beat him and drove him out of the area.
Saturday's attack by Morshed Khan's followers, according to the police, was a retaliatory strike against his opponents, which ultimately resulted in injuries to civilians.
