A Dhaka court today (18 November) sent two accused individuals to jail after they confessed to killing Rangpur businessman Ashraful Haque, whose dismembered body was found in 26 pieces near the National Eidgah area in the capital on 13 November.
The accused, prime suspect Jarezul Islam, 39, Ashraful's close friend, also known as Jarez Mia, and Shamima Akter, 35, Jarezul's girlfriend, also known as Kohinur, gave confessional statements in the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court today (18 November).
Sub-Inspector of the Prosecution Division, Jinnat Ali, confirmed the matter.
After their five-day remand period, the suspects were produced before the court by investigating officer Sub-Inspector Md Enamul Hasan of the Detective Branch's Dhanmondi Zonal Team. As the suspects agreed to give voluntary confessions, the officer applied to have their statements officially recorded.
Following the application, Magistrate Abdul Wahab recorded the confession of Jarezul, while another magistrate, Masum Mia, recorded Shamima's statement.
They were subsequently sent to jail.
On 14 November, Jarezul was arrested from Cumilla's Daudkandi, while Shamima was taken into custody by the RAB in connection with the case. The next day, the court placed the accused on five-day remand.
According to the case statement, Shamima had an extramarital relationship with Ashraful, which later involved Jarezul, causing tensions among the trio.
In a premeditated act, Shamima and Jarezul first murdered Ashraful and left his body in a house in Kadamtali area.
On 13 November, following their plan, they dismembered Ashraful's body into 26 pieces in the bathroom of the same house. They then placed the body parts into two drums and abandoned them near the corner of the National Eidgah area before fleeing.
Ashraful's sister, Anzira Begum, filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station on 14 November, naming Jarezul Islam as the prime accused.
The gruesome case came to light after police recovered a dismembered body packed inside two drums near the gate of the National Eidgah ground, adjacent to the High Court, on 13 November.
Later, Ashraful Haque's identity was confirmed through fingerprint analysis.
