Bangladesh has requested consular access to Philip Sangmao, who was arrested by West Bengal police for allegedly assisting the prime suspects in the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman bin Hadi to flee to India.
In a statement issued yesterday (14 March), the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata said Dhaka has formally sought permission from the Indian authorities to provide additional information about the arrested individual and has asked the government of India to grant consular access.
The request for consular access was made after Philip Sangma's arrest in connection with the cross-border escape of two suspects – Faisal Karim Masud alias Daud Khan and Alamgir Hossain – accused in the Hadi murder case. Yesterday, Philip Sangmao was arrested in West Bengal.
Acting on a tip-off, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Bengal Police arrested him from an area adjacent to the Shantipur Bypass, Indian news agency ANI reported, citing a press statement of STF in a post on X.
During preliminary interrogation, the post said, Philip Sangmao admitted to being involved in the illicit activity of facilitating the cross-border movement of people in exchange for money.
Earlier on 8 March, the same force of West Bengal Police arrested Faisal and Alamgir. The duo were arrested near the Bongaon border area for illegally entering and staying in India.
On 12 December last at around 2:20pm, assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on Hadi, leaving him critically injured with gunshot wounds to the head and below the right ear.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Evercare Hospital, Dhaka.
As his condition worsened, he was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on 15 December for advanced treatment. He died there on 18 December, about a week later, while undergoing treatment.
Following the shooting, a case was filed with the Paltan Police Station on 14 December on charges of attempted murder, which was later converted into a murder case after Hadi's death.
Law enforcement agencies have identified Faisal as the shooter in the attack on Hadi. Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said Faisal's associate, Alamgir Hossain, was riding the motorcycle used in the attack.
