APBn arrests fraud gang ringleader at Dhaka airport

The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital arrested a fraudster named Md Jabed, 47, alleged ringleader of a fraudulent gang, early Wednesday.

Confirming the matter, Airport APBn Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mohammad Ziaul Haque said that Jabed was caught red-handed while conning some airport passengers on Tuesday.

Jabed, from Gazipur sadar, and his gang were carrying out various fraudulent activities with the passengers at the airport, the ASP added.

"He [Jabed] used to con passengers promising dollar endorsement or exchange, and disappear after snatching passengers' passports, travel documents. He even forcibly collected money after threatening passengers' families…" he added.

"He even posed himself as police personnel and threatened passengers and made them pay," Ziaul said, adding that Jabed was arrested four times before and was behind bars. However, mysteriously he had secured bail and involved himself in the fraudulence activities again," he said.

Jabed has allegedly developed an airport-based gang by his own name. He has 5-6 active members in this gang who have been arrested by the Airport Armed Police Battalion at various times and legal action was also taken against them.

On 3 January, Jabed cheated on one passenger Md Shafiqul Islam's relatives by saying that he [Shafiqul] had missed his flight to Singapore.

Jabed told the relatives that Shafiqul's air ticket to Singapore had been cancelled and he had to buy a new one to go to his destination.

The family sent around Tk66,000 to Jabed through a mobile financial service, said ASP Ziaul.

Later, the family lodged a complaint to the Airport Armed Police Battalion office.

After investigation, the APBn arrested Jabed from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in the early hours yesterday.

A case has been filed against him.
