At least 70 bhoris of gold and 600 bhoris of silver were stolen from a jewellery shop in Mohammadpur early Monday (5 January).
The thieves also took gold purchase receipts and Tk4 lakh in cash.
The theft took place at New Rana Jewellers in Chandrima Bazar after 3:00am, shop owner Masud Rana said. He told reporters that he had closed the shop at 11pm and returned home.
When he came back to open the shop in the morning, he found the locks broken. Inside, the safe and other valuables had been vandalised.
Of the stolen gold, Masud said 50 bhoris belonged to him personally, while the remaining 20 bhoris had been kept as collateral.
CCTV footage from the shop shows six masked individuals breaking in at around 3:21am, while two others stood guard at the gate. Most of the thieves were wearing caps, face masks, or hoodies, and were seen carrying jewellery boxes out of the shop.
Mohammadpur police station Officer-in-Charge Mezbah Uddin said police are investigating into the incident, and the process of filing a case is underway.
