Six people, including bank officials and security guards, have been arrested in connection with the alleged embezzlement of Tk8,94,80,826 from customers of Agrani Bank's Sreenagar branch in Munshiganj.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating allegations that the accused, acting in collusion, siphoned off customers' money by creating fake fixed deposit receipts (FDRs), forging cheques and using fake deposit slips. The money was allegedly embezzled by altering account information.
ACC Deputy Director (Public Relations) Md Aktarul Islam confirmed the development today (8 October).
The arrested people include Agrani Bank Sreenagar branch principal Officer and former Manager Sharif Uddin, 39; former Cash Officer Md Jinnah Hossain, 34; security guards Ranju Ahmed, 30, and Abdul Hai, 42; and Senior Principal Officer and former Manager Rezaul Haque, 42. Another Cash Officer Md Sharifuzzaman was arrested earlier on 4 October in connection with the same incident.
All those arrested have been temporarily suspended, according to the ACC.
The ACC said it has so far found evidence of the embezzlement of Tk8,94,80,826. Its investigation currently involves 91 affected customers, while the preliminary number of victims is believed to be more than 200.
The five officials and employees were arrested at the bank around 5:30pm on 7 October with assistance from Sreenagar police, following an ACC investigation into the branch.
Police Additional Superintendent Md Kamran Hossain confirmed the arrests. He said the five were arrested under Section 54.
The ACC investigation team is currently collecting statements from affected customers at the branch. The commission said it will file a case over the allegations as soon as the investigation is completed.
The alleged fraud has caused concern among depositors, with the investigation indicating that customers' funds were withdrawn through falsified banking documents and changes to account records.
The ACC said its investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the alleged embezzlement and identify all those involved.
