4 arrested for marching to Mujib’s Dhanmondi 32 with flowers sent to jail in old anti-terror case
A Dhaka court has sent four people to jail who were arrested today while attempting to pay tribute with flowers at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence at Dhanmondi 32 to mark the historic 7 March.
The arrests are linked to a five-and-a-half-month-old anti-terrorism case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad issued the jail order following a police request.
The accused are Sohel Mizi, Mosammat Runa Begum, Jonota Begum, and Akhsari Khanum Urmi.
Police produced the accused before the court earlier in the day. Sub-Inspector Abu Sharif, the investigating officer of Kalabagan Police Station, requested that they be remanded, citing sufficient preliminary evidence linking them to the case.
The request also noted that further interrogation is needed to identify the main perpetrators and other participants, as the investigation is ongoing.
According to the case, on 24 September last year, the accused, along with around 100-150 unidentified people, held a protest march in the Panthapath area under Kalabagan Police Station.
They reportedly chanted slogans against the interim government and were associated with banned organisations. Some participants fled when police arrived, while others were arrested.
The case was initially filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act on 25 September 2025 by Sub-Inspector Golam Mostofa of Kalabagan Police Station.
Following today's incident, a fresh case was filed against the arrestees under the Anti-Terrorism Act, confirmed Shah Mostafa Tariquzzaman, assistant commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Dhanmondi zone.
According to police, the arrests were made around 6:30 a.m. from the road opposite Square Hospital, near Mujib's residence.
AC Shah Mostafa said two people had been arrested earlier in the morning while trying to enter the Dhanmondi 32 area despite police barricades, and another four were arrested later in the evening.
Earlier today, a procession of around 30-40 people started from Dhanmondi 27 and marched towards Dhanmondi 32 to pay tribute on 7 March. The group dispersed after police obstructed them. Three women and a man were detained and taken to Kalabagan Police Station.
Speaking to reporters later in the afternoon, Officer-in-Charge Md Fazle Ashik said the detainees had marched towards Dhanmondi 32 carrying flowers. The four were later sent to court under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The Awami League had announced programmes to mark 7 March despite its activities currently being banned.
However, it could not be confirmed whether the arrested individuals were affiliated with the party or any of its banned associate organisations.
On 7 March 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered a historic speech at the then-Ramna Race Course (now Suhrawardy Udyan), directing freedom-loving Bengalis to wage a decisive struggle against the Pakistan occupation forces.
