Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the murder of Samiur Rahman Alvi, a student of Dr Maleka University College, in the Jigatola area under Hazaribagh Police Station.

According to police, the incident is believed to have stemmed from a prior dispute.

An argument broke out on the evening of 15 May at a restaurant in Dhanmondi Lake's Baganbari area over a disagreement about seating. A physical altercation ensued between the victim, Alvi, his friends, and a group of individuals, said Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of the Ramna Division, at a press conference today (21 May).

The following day, on 16 May, the accused allegedly carried out a premeditated attack, he said at the press conference held at the DMP Media Centre in Minto Road.

The arrested individuals are – Md Raihan, 20, Md Habibur Rahman Munna, 26, Somoti Pal, 23, and Kawsar, 21. They were apprehended during raids in the Dhanmondi and Hazaribagh areas on Tuesday (20 May).

Police said the arrested individuals have confessed to killing Alvi out of a personal dispute. Legal proceedings against them are underway, and efforts to arrest others involved in the murder are ongoing.

Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam said the victim, Alvi, lived with his family on Maneswar Road under the Hazaribagh Police Station. He was a third-year honours student at Dr Maleka University College.

On 16 May, Alvi and his three friends – Ashraful Islam, Zakaria, and Ismail Hossain – were at a restaurant near Dhanmondi Lake. At that time, the accused persons, along with several unidentified individuals, lured them to the Jigatola bus stand area and launched a surprise attack. The assailants stabbed Alvi and his friends multiple times with knives and machetes, police said.

A case has been filed with Hazaribagh Police Station in connection with the incident.
