Family says cricketer Nayeem beaten with pipe by police before detention; his father harassed
Nayeem's family said a three-member team stopped his vehicle in the Lalkhan Bazar area, and Nayeem was assaulted before being taken to the police station.
National team off-spinner Nayeem Hasan was beaten with a hard plastic pipe and later taken to Khulshi Police Station after being stopped on his way home from Chattogram airport, according to his family, who also alleged that his father was harassed at the police station.
Nayeem's family has filed a case with Khulshi Police Station over the incident.
The family alleged that the incident took place around midnight today (13 June) when Nayeem was returning to his Chandgaon-Bahaddarhat home by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw after landing at Shah Amanat International Airport.
They said a three-member team stopped his vehicle in the Lalkhan Bazar area, and Nayeem was assaulted before being taken to the police station.
Speaking at a press briefing at the family home in Chattogram this morning, Nayeem's elder brother Kamrul Alam Sabbir said the cricketer initially agreed to a search after being stopped.
"He consented when they said they would search him. But immediately after that, he was pulled out of the CNG, his throat was grabbed, and a person identifying as a DB officer hit him with a pipe," he alleged.
He further claimed that despite repeated requests to search his bag, Nayeem was beaten and later taken into custody.
Sabbir said visible injury marks were found on different parts of Nayeem's body, adding that the cricketer was left deeply traumatised by the incident.
According to the family, Nayeem managed to call his father after being taken to the station.
Former councillor Mahbubur Alam, Nayeem's father, later went to Khulshi Police Station in search of his son. The family alleged that police personnel on duty behaved discourteously with him and harassed him.
The family said Nayeem was left shaken and unable to immediately understand what was happening inside the station.
CMP later suspended two police personnel and launched an investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct in connection with the incident. They also detained another who initially identified himself as a Detective Branch personnel. A separate probe is also ongoing.
Around 11:30am, CMP Commissioner Hasan Md Shawkat Ali visited Nayeem's residence and met family members.
The commissioner expressed regret over the incident and said immediate action had been taken after preliminary findings revealed evidence of unprofessional conduct by the officers involved.
"Police must maintain professional behaviour in maintaining law and order. Under no circumstances is such an unwanted incident acceptable," the commissioner said.
Earlier, police said Nayeem had been brought to the station based on intelligence information suggesting possible involvement in transporting a smuggling-related consignment. However, officers later searched his bag and found no illegal or suspicious items.
Nayeem's family demanded a proper investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
The cricketer is scheduled to speak to journalists at his home around 4pm today about the incident.
