ZI Khan Panna to defend Inu in Kushtia killings case
While stressing that anyone involved in the killings must be punished, he also reiterated his moral opposition to the death penalty
Senior Supreme Court lawyer Z I Khan Panna will represent former information minister Hasanul Haq Inu in the crimes against humanity case over the killing of seven people in Kushtia during the July Uprising last year.
Today (28 September), he disclosed this while speaking to journalists in front of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). Earlier, he met Inu and submitted a vakalatnama to the tribunal to represent him in the legal proceedings.
During the briefing, he said the state apparatus is not functioning properly, and the judiciary is not free from this deviation.
Answering questions from the media, Panna observed that in an atmosphere dominated by mob culture, fairness has lost its way—something the state is taking advantage of. He confirmed that he will fight the legal battle on behalf of the former information minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president.
While stressing that anyone involved in the killings must be punished, he also reiterated his moral opposition to the death penalty.
Earlier, the ICT had accepted formal charges against Inu in connection with the Kushtia killings during the July Uprising last year.
The tribunal also ordered Inu to appear before it on 29 September, the date set for the hearing on the framing of charges.
On 25 September, a three-member ICT bench led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury accepted the formal charges against Inu.
