Writ seeks evaluation of bearing pads used in metro rail, flyovers
The respondents in the writ include the secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and other concerned authorities
A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a writ petition today (27 October) with the High Court seeking the formation of a committee to assess the quality of bearing pads used in the metro rail and all flyovers across the country.
The writ calls for a committee to be constituted to verify whether the load-bearing pads used in these infrastructure projects meet proper quality standards.
It also requests urgent and appropriate measures based on the findings of the committee's investigation report.
The petition was filed in public interest by Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun with the relevant branch of the High Court.
The respondents in the writ include the secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and other concerned authorities.
According to the petitioner, the High Court bench led by Justice Fahmida Kader is likely to hold a hearing on the writ later this week.
Yesterday (26 October), at around 12:20pm, a load-bearing pad on pillar 433 near the Farmgate metro station detached and fell, resulting in one death and injuries to two others, also disrupting services for hours.
Just a year ago, on 18 September 2024, a bearing pad on pillar 430 near the same station fell from the metro structure. Although no casualties occurred then, services were suspended for nearly 11 hours.
