Writ filed challenging President Shahabuddin’s swearing-in
The petition also calls for an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity against the president over his “silent role” during the July Uprising, alongside former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking a declaration that President Mohammed Shahabuddin's swearing-in was illegal due to his dual citizenship.
The petition also calls for an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity against the president over his "silent role" during the July Uprising, alongside former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The writ was submitted to the relevant division of the High Court today (2 March) and is likely to be heard by a double bench tomorrow (3 March).
Earlier, on 26 February, a legal notice was sent to the Parliament Secretariat and the law secretary, urging the removal of President Shahabuddin and the appointment of a new president in accordance with the constitution. The notice was sent by Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Shahriar.
According to the notice, the president allegedly violated his oath by making statements that were disrespectful to the events of July.
It said further legal steps would be taken if no action is taken within 24 hours.
