Verify birth, education certificates during marriage registration: HC

The High Court has asked marriage registrars to check birth and education certificates of both the brides and bridegrooms at the time of marriage registrations.

On Tuesday, the division bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mostafizur Rahman also directed the concerned wing of the law ministry to closely monitor the implementation of the court order.

The court asked the district marriage registrar to investigate the incident of the marriage of a teenager in Sonagazi upazila of Feni.

Earlier on 7 March, the High Court summoned Marriage Registrar Sirajul Islam Majumder for registering the marriage.

Majumder has been exempted from personal appearance after he offered apologies before the court.

Jahidul Islam Jabed, of Alampur village in Sonagazi, eloped away with a teenage girl of Bagdana village of the same upazila and married her. The girl's father Abdul Mannan filed a case against Jabed with Sonagazi Model Police Station on 10 October 2020.

The case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and Jahidul Islam was arrested and granted bail later.

The marriage registrar faces the charges of recording the marriage after falsely increasing the age of the bride to show her eligibility for that.
