2 more sent to jail over attack, vandalism at New Gini Properties
The court rejected bail pleas from the two accused, bringing the number of people jailed in the case to five.
A Dhaka court today (28 September) sent two more accused to jail in a case filed over an attack, vandalism, assault and looting at the New Gini Properties housing project in ECB Chattar.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order after the hearing, confirmed Tarekur Rahman, sub-inspector of the prosecution department.
The accused sent to jail are Md Shah Alam, 47, and Md Abul Ashem, 53.
Earlier, Subrata Debnath, inspector of Cantonment Police Station and investigating officer in the case, produced the accused before the court and sought their detention in jail.
The investigating officer said in the application that preliminary evidence had substantiated the complainant's allegations against the accused and that the investigation was still ongoing.
He opposed their bail, saying they could go into hiding if released and hamper the investigation. He also said keeping them in jail until the investigation is completed was necessary.
Lawyers Md Jasim Uddin and Farid Uddin sought bail for the accused, while the prosecution opposed the plea.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petitions and ordered the accused to be sent to jail.
Earlier, three other accused arrested in the same case were also sent to jail by the court.
According to the case statement, around 50 people entered the New Gini Properties Ltd project area in ECB Chattar under Cantonment Police Station on 26 September.
The attackers fired around 50 rounds indiscriminately and carried out the attack with machetes, knives and sticks, leaving several people, including site engineer Md Parvez, seriously injured.
The attackers looted cash, laptops, computers, BRB cables, cameras and professional media equipment from the project site. They also vandalised vehicles.
The complaint said the incident caused the company losses of around Tk1.43 crore, while goods worth Tk1.50 crore were allegedly stolen.
The attackers also entered, vandalised and looted popular content creator Salman Muqtadir's BrownFish Studio, located at the project site.
Police from Cantonment Police Station went to the scene after receiving information about the attack. The attackers opened fire at the police, prompting officers to fire five rounds from shotguns in self-defence and to bring the situation under control.
Two accused named in the case were arrested from the scene, while another was later arrested during a subsequent operation. Police also recovered locally made weapons and bullet casings from the arrested individuals.
Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, an official of the project, filed the case with Cantonment Police Station.
