Take action against those responsible for vandalising Bangabandhu’s sculptures: HC

The High Court (HC) has directed to take action against those responsible for vandalising Bangabandhu's sculptures in the country.

A virtual HC bench of justices JBM Hasan and Md Khairul Alam passed the order on Tuesday.

Lawyer Nahid Sultana Yuthi and Shah Manjurul Haque appeared for the writ petition. On the other hand, the Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Deputy Attorney General Barrister ABM Abdullah Al Mahmoud Bashar represented the state.

The court directed all the media to create public awareness in this regard.

The court also asked the secretary of the home ministry, secretary of the religion ministry, secretary of the ministry of liberation war, inspector general of police (IGP), director general (DG) of the Islamic Foundation and the imam (khatib) of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque to implement the order.

Earlier, a writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking directions to ensure the protection of all the sculptures of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Miscreants vandalised the sculpture of Bangabandhu in Kushtia on Friday night (4 December).

Later on Sunday, police arrested four in connection with the incident.

According to Kushtia Municipality sources, it was decided in November that three sculptures of Bangabandhu at the intersection of Panch Rasta of the town will be erected with the municipality's funds.

Work started on 17 November and a part of it was already finished but some miscreants vandalised various parts and broke them off.
