Regent Group Chairman Shahed shown arrested in 2 NRB Bank loan default cases
Shahed has been in jail since 20 July after being arrested in a Tk2.16 crore cheque dishonour case filed by Mercantile Co-operative Bank.
A Dhaka court today (27 July) ordered Regent Hospital and Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed, to be shown arrested in two loan default cases filed by NRB Bank.
The order was passed by Judge Md Mosharraf Hossain of the Fourth Artha Rin Adalat following a hearing.
Confirming the development to The Business Standard, Shahed's lawyer Mohammad Dabir Uddin said the court declined to grant bail because his client could not deposit 25% of the bank's claim, as required under the Money Loan Court Act.
"We will challenge the order before a higher court," the lawyer said.
According to the case documents, Shahed took a loan of Tk1.52 crore from NRB Bank in the name of Regent Hospital in 2014. He also obtained a credit card facility worth Tk5.55 lakh.
After the outstanding dues remained unpaid for years, NRB Bank filed two separate cases in 2021. With accumulated interest, the bank's total claim now stands at around Tk3.52 crore.
Shahed has remained in jail since 20 July, when Pallabi police arrested him from the ECB Chattar area in the capital in connection with a cheque dishonour case involving Tk2.16 crore filed by Mercantile Co-operative Bank.
Shahed first came under national scrutiny in July 2020 after the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided Regent Hospital in Uttara and seized fake Covid-19 test reports.
RAB subsequently filed a case against Shahed and 16 others with Uttara West Police Station, accusing them of issuing forged Covid-19 test certificates.
On 15 July, 2020, RAB arrested Shahed near the Satkhira border. He was later taken to Uttara, where law enforcers recovered firearms during a subsequent operation.
Since then, Shahed has faced multiple criminal cases involving allegations of fraud, forgery and deception.
On 28 September, 2020, a court sentenced him to life imprisonment in an Arms Act case.
He was later sentenced to three years' imprisonment on 21 August 2023 in a case over acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income.
Earlier, in 2010, Shahed had also been sentenced to six months' imprisonment in a cheque fraud case.
He was released from prison on bail on 4 September, 2024.
