Ijtema ground clash: Appellate Division upholds HC bail to Saad followers

The Appellate Division today (27 January) upheld a High Court (HC) order that granted bail to 23 followers of Maulana Saad Kandlavi in a case over the violent clashes between two factions of Tabligh Jamaat at the Bishwa Ijtema ground in Tongi.
A three-member bench headed by Md Ashfaqul Islam passed the order after hearing a petition in this regard.
The court also deferred to 23 February the hearing of a petition filed by the prosecution seeking a stay order on the HC order.

Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan stood for the defendants while Additional Attorney General Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan represented the state at the court.
Mamun said the court granted their appeal for bail till February 23.
On January 8, an HC bench granted to the 23 accused in the case, but the prosecution submitted a petition seeking a stay order.
Four people were killed and 40 were injured in a clash between two factions of Tabligh Jamaat at the Biswa Ijtema ground in Tongi on 18 December 2024.
On 19 December, Maulana Zubair's follower M Alam Hossain filed the murder case against 29 people at the Tongi West Police Station naming Wasiful Islam as the main accused.
