‘I will never seek justice for slain police again’: Constable Shoaibur in court
Appealing directly to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, he said, “You are the son of a soldier. I have done nothing wrong, and I humbly ask for your forgiveness.”
Detained Constable Shoaibur Rahman Joy told journalists today (1 April) he will never seek justice for slain police officers again.
He was first taken into custody in September 2024 after organising police personnel to demand justice during the July uprising and has remained in detention since.
On his way to the CMM court for a hearing, he told reporters, "If seeking justice for my fallen colleagues was a crime, I will never do it again. I have a small child – please let me return to my family."
Appealing directly to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, he said, "You are the son of a soldier. I have done nothing wrong, and I humbly ask for your forgiveness."
Turning to the circumstances of his repeated charges, he added, "With due respect to the home minister, why am I being repeatedly charged with false cases? If the IGP and Commissioner are unaware, then who is filing them? They say there was authoritarian rule before, but who is acting in the same way now?"
"I apologise to every senior officer in the police. I am not affiliated with any political party. If I were, let more cases be filed; and if I am connected to Awami League politics, let me face the death penalty," he pleaded.
The court, presided over by Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir, ordered Joy's continued detention.
The case arises from an incident on 19 July 2024 near the Rampura BTV building, when protesters were reportedly attacked and fired upon, injuring Abu Noman.
Following treatment, Noman filed the attempted murder case at Rampura Police Station, prompting the ongoing legal proceedings.
