HC to rule tomorrow on petition seeking Tk2cr compensation for each measles death
352 children died from measles and related symptoms over the past 55 days, averaging at least six deaths per day based on government data.
The High Court today (18 May) concluded hearing on a writ petition that sought directives to provide Tk2 crore in compensation to the families of 352 children who died from measles and measles-related complications.
The court has set tomorrow (19 May) for delivering its order in the case after the bench of Justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury concluded the hearing.
The public interest litigation was filed on 10 May by Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Humaun Kabir Pallob, naming the health secretary and other relevant officials as respondents.
According to media reports cited in the petition, 352 children died from measles and related symptoms over the past 55 days, averaging at least six deaths per day based on government data.
The figure has reportedly risen to around 10 deaths per day over the past week, even as authorities had indicated a declining trend in measles fatalities.
The highest number of cases has been reported in Dhaka division, while Rangpur recorded the lowest.
On 16 May alone, nine more children reportedly died from measles or related complications.
The statistics were compiled from the Directorate General of Health Services' (DGHS) regular bulletins.
