HC permits Zubaida to appeal against 3-year jail sentence in graft case

The High Court has granted Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP's Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman, permission to appeal against her three-year jail sentence in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The court accepted an application seeking condonation of a 587-day delay in filing the appeal today (13 May). The order was passed by Justice Md Khosruzzaman following a hearing on the petition.

Zubaida's lawyer, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, confirmed that she will now proceed with filing an appeal against the sentence.

The case was originally filed on 26 September 2007 by ACC Deputy Director Mohammad Zahirul Huda at Kafrul Police Station in Dhaka.

It named Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and her mother Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu as accused.

On 2 August 2023, Judge Md Asaduzzaman of the Dhaka Senior Special Judge's Court sentenced Tarique Rahman to nine years and Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison in connection with the case.

The government later stayed Zubaida's sentence through a notification issued on 29 September 2023.

The notification, signed by Mohammad Abu Sayeed Molla, deputy secretary of the Security Services Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs, suspended her sentence for one year on the condition that she surrender and file an appeal.
