Man gets life term for killing pregnant wife, unborn twins in Ctg
According to the case documents, the incident took place on 23 May 2017 in the Haramia union of Sandwip upazila.
A Chattogram court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his seven-month pregnant wife by kicking her in the abdomen, causing the deaths of her unborn twin sons, in Sandwip in 2017.
The court also sentenced convict Md Mamun to an additional seven years in prison and fined him Tk50,000 for attempting to destroy evidence by setting the body on fire after the killing.
Judge Md Shahabuddin of the Jononirapotta Bighnokari Oporadh Daman Tribunal, Chattogram, delivered the verdict on Thursday (14 May).
According to the case documents, the incident took place on 23 May 2017 in the Haramia union of Sandwip upazila.
Mamun, a van driver by profession, had been married to Rabeya Begum for 12 years, and the couple had three daughters.
Family members said Mamun was unhappy over having three daughters in succession. After Rabeya became pregnant again, he frequently quarrelled with her, believing the twins she was carrying would also be girls.
On the day of the incident, Mamun was supposed to bring medicine for his pregnant wife. An argument broke out after he returned home without it. At one stage, he allegedly kicked Rabeya in the abdomen in anger, killing her and the unborn twins on the spot.
Investigators said Mamun later carried the body in his van to a marshland beside the house and set it on fire in an attempt to conceal the crime. He then informed his in-laws that Rabeya was missing.
Relatives later recovered Rabeya's half-burnt body from the marshland after searching the area. Police subsequently recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Following the incident, the victim's brother-in-law, Kamal Pasha, filed a murder case with Sandwip Police Station.
After the killing, locals detained Mamun and handed him over to the police. During remand interrogation, he confessed to killing his wife and setting the body on fire to destroy evidence. He later also gave a confessional statement before the court.
Tribunal Public Prosecutor Shahadat Hossain said Mamun later secured bail and went into hiding. The court has issued a warrant against him.
