HC asks why family of Chhatra League activist who died in DB custody should not get Tk5cr compensation
Victim's family has alleged that he was tortured while in police custody.
The High Court has issued a rule asking why Tk5 crore in compensation should not be given to the family of Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed Pranto, a Chhatra League activist who died after being detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Faridpur.
The rule was issued today (4 August) by the High Court bench of Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury and Justice Md Ziaul Hoque following a preliminary hearing on a writ petition filed by Ain o Salish Kendra.
Advocate Shaheen Ahmed represented the petitioner during the hearing.

According to the case details, a district DB team detained Pranto in mid-June with 100 grams of marijuana from Gondardia village in Madhukhali upazila. He was later taken to Madhukhali Police Station.
After several other drug-related raids, he was taken to Faridpur early the following morning and kept in DB custody.
He was later taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where he died on 21 June while undergoing treatment, according to police.
His family has alleged that he was tortured while in police custody.
Police, however, said Pranto fell ill while in custody and was taken to the hospital, where he died during treatment.
Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed Pranto, 24, was the son of Mirza Eskendar of Gondardia in Madhukhali Municipality and a student of Faridpur Law College.
