Govt issues ordinance to create separate Supreme Court secretariat
On 20 November, the interim government’s Advisory Council gave final approval to the draft of the ordinance
To ensure full independence of the judiciary, the government has issued the 'Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, 2025', providing for the establishment of a separate secretariat for the Supreme Court and fully separating the judiciary from the executive branch.
The ordinance was issued today (30 November) under the directive of President Mohammed Shahabuddin through the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
Earlier, on 20 November, the interim government's Advisory Council gave final approval to the draft of the ordinance, paving the way for the establishment of the separate secretariat.
The move follows a proposal submitted to the law ministry on 27 October last year by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, calling for the formation of an independent judicial secretariat for the Supreme Court.
The proposal included a draft ordinance, an organogram for the proposed secretariat, and possible reforms in the Rules of Business and Allocation of Business, aimed at ensuring proper supervision and control over subordinate courts and tribunals by the High Court Division in line with the constitution of the country.
