Five of the six accused arrested over the fatal killing of BNP leader Abul Bashar Badshah in Dhaka's Adabar area have confessed to their involvement before a court.
The remaining accused was sent to jail after being produced before the court today (4 July).
Investigation Officer and Adabar Police Station Sub-Inspector Hafizur Rahman produced the six accused - Nirab, Ripon, Suman Mia, Majnu Mia, Shahid and Mizan - before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman.
According to Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman, five of the accused, excluding Mizan, voluntarily gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The court recorded their statements and ordered that all six be sent to jail, he said.
Police said members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Suman from the Kazir Akh area of Jamalpur Sadar and Shahid from the Barail area of Mymensingh's Nandail earlier today.
The remaining accused were arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from the Saheb Nagar area of Ishwarganj in Mymensingh.
Earlier, on 3 July, two other suspects - Soyeb Hossain Soyaab and Md Kabir - were sent to jail after being arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
According to the case statement, the violence originated from an altercation following Brazil's victory in a Fifa World Cup football match on the night of 29 June.
Police said one of the accused, Nirab, repeatedly blew a whistle in celebration after the match, prompting objections from local resident Habibur Rahman, who reportedly suffers from heart disease. Although local residents initially resolved the dispute, tensions persisted.
The following day, Habibur's nephew Saddam Hossain invited the accused to his office in Nobodoy Housing in Mohammadpur in an attempt to settle the matter.
However, police said three of the accused allegedly intercepted Saddam on 30 June, attempted to rob him and attacked him with sharp weapons after recognising him as Habibur's nephew.
Local residents later organised a community mediation meeting at a shop in Nobodoy Housing's kancha bazaar area.
According to the complaint, the accused became aggrieved over the mediation and lay in wait near the Nobodoy four-road intersection on the evening of 1 July.
At around 8:30pm, as Saddam Hossain and Abul Bashar Badshah were leaving the meeting, the accused allegedly attacked them with machetes and other sharp weapons, leaving both seriously injured.
The victims were first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Badshah was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 11:30pm.
Saddam Hossain is currently undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
Badshah's wife, Smriti Akter, subsequently filed a murder case with Adabar Police Station over the incident.
