BNP leader Miftah made Sylhet Wasa chairman

The government has appointed Miftah Siddique, co-organising secretary of the BNP National Executive Committee, as chairman of the Sylhet Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA).

The appointment was made through a gazette notification issued on Sunday (9 August) by Mosammat Aktarun Nessa, senior assistant secretary of the Water Supply-2 branch of the Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

According to the notification, Miftah Siddique has been appointed chairman of the Sylhet WASA board for a three-year term under Section 7(1) of the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Amendment) Act, 2026.

Confirming the appointment yesterday (12 August), Miftah Siddique said, "I will try to discharge the responsibility entrusted to me properly."

He said Sylhet city has been facing a severe shortage of safe drinking water for a long time.

"The government has nominated me to this position with the aim of improving the water supply and sewerage systems, enhancing service quality and resolving the longstanding problems faced by city residents," he said.

Although the chairman of the Sylhet WASA board has been appointed, the authority's managing director post remains vacant.

Since the BNP formed the government, several party leaders have been appointed to positions at various public institutions.

Earlier, Sylhet district BNP President Abdul Kayum Chowdhury was appointed administrator of Sylhet City Corporation, former district BNP president Abul Kaher Chowdhury was appointed administrator of the district council, and former metropolitan BNP president Rezaul Hasan Koyes Lodi was appointed chairman of the Sylhet Urban Development Authority.
