The investigating officer (IO) of the case, Inspector Moklesur Rahman of Gulshan Police Station, produced Apu before the court following a four-day remand and sought permission to record his confessional statement.

A Dhaka court today (6 August) sent Jane Alam Apu, the expelled joint convener of the Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, to jail after he confessed to attempting to extort Tk50 lakh from the residence of Shammi Ahmed, a former member of parliament.
The investigating officer (IO) of the case, Inspector Moklesur Rahman of Gulshan Police Station, produced Apu before the court following a four-day remand and sought permission to record his confessional statement.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam recorded the statement and ordered Apu to be sent to jail, according to court sources.
Apu, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from the Wari area of the capital on 1 August.
On 3 August, another accused in the same case, Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman alias Riad, a member of Chhatra Sangsad, confessed his involvement.
One more Chhatra Sangsad leader, Aminul, was sent to the juvenile correction centre in Gazipur.
Three other arrestees were sent to jail.
The case was filed by Shammi Ahmed's husband, Siddique Abu Zafar, against six individuals on 17 July.
According to the case statement, a group of individuals, including Riad and Apu, identifying themselves as "coordinators" of the Students Against Discrimination, went to the AL lawmaker's residence.
They allegedly threatened Zafar and demanded Tk50 lakh and jewellery.
Fearing for his safety, Shammi's husband paid them Tk10 lakh. The group returned on 19 July, reiterating their threats and demanding the remaining Tk40 lakh.
On 26 July, when the group returned again, Zafar called the police. A police team apprehended five individuals at the scene, including Riad, but Apu managed to escape.
The arrestees were Riad, Ibrahim Hossain Munna, Sakadaun Siam, Sadman Sadab, and Aminul Islam.
All five held positions in the SAD and Chhatra Sangsad. They were expelled from their respective organisations following the arrest.
The police have already seized four bank cheque pages valued at Tk2.5 crore and recovered Tk2,98,000 in cash from Riad's possession at two different locations.
