Ex-ministers Anisul, Menon sent to jail after remand

A Dhaka court today ordered former ministers Anisul Haque and Rashed Khan Menon to be sent to jail following the completion of their five-day remand in connection with the killing of Mehedi Hasan during the July Uprising.
Police produced the two before the court after the remand period ended. The investigating officer petitioned to keep them in jail until the investigation is completed.
After the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rakibul Hasan passed the order to send them to jail.
Earlier, the court had granted a five-day remand, and on 20 August the investigating officer took the two accused into custody for questioning.
According to the case statement, Mehedi Hasan had joined a peaceful protest in the Kazla area of Jatrabari on 18 July last year.
He sustained injuries in a shootout involving police and Awami League leaders and activists. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died around 6pm.
Following the incident, a murder case was filed at Jatrabari Police Station.
