Ex-ICT chief prosecutor Tajul rejects graft allegations, says claims aim to undermine ongoing trials
The claims are intended to cast doubt on the tribunal’s judicial process, he said.
Former chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Mohammad Tajul Islam has denied allegations that he was involved in corruption and financial irregularities, calling them "entirely baseless" and challenging his accusers to provide evidence.
"Over the past two days, certain media outlets and social media users, citing a prosecutor of the tribunal, have spread false and malicious claims that I was involved in corruption and financial irregularities. These allegations are completely baseless and unsupported by any evidence," Tajul said in a Facebook post today (24 February).
He said that the claims were intended to cast doubt on the tribunal's judicial process. "These accusations are being made with a deliberate motive to question the integrity of ongoing trials," he wrote.
"I challenge anyone to produce even minimal evidence in support of these claims. Every step taken by me and the prosecution team was transparent and lawful," he added.
Tajul also alleged that a "vested quarter" was attempting to divert attention from ongoing trials. "An organised campaign is being carried out to redirect focus from the trials of fallen autocrats and perpetrators of genocide, with the intent of slowing down or obstructing justice," he said.
He maintained that no questions were raised about his conduct while in office. "During my tenure, no one challenged my actions. Now, after my departure, certain individuals are trying to cast doubt on the judicial process to benefit the accused," he added, urging all parties to refrain from "spreading falsehoods and engaging in malicious activities".
The controversy follows remarks by tribunal prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud, who, in a Facebook post yesterday (23 February), accused Tajul and fellow prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim of corruption and irregularities.
Earlier, on 23 February, the government issued a notification removing Tajul from his post and appointing Aminul Islam as the new chief prosecutor. Tajul had served in the role since September 2024, and the new chief prosecutor has already assumed charge.
