Eastern Bank files Tk200cr defamation lawsuit against customer
The court took cognizance of the case and issued a summons against the customer, Md Murtoza Ali, EBL said in a press release

Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) on Tuesday filed a defamation lawsuit against one of its clients, demanding Tk200 crore as compensation, with the First Joint District Judge Court of Dhaka.
The court took cognizance of the case and issued a summons against the customer, Md Murtoza Ali, EBL said in a press release.
Murtoza, a customer of EBL's Chandgaon branch, submitted a petition for filing a case against the Board of Directors, managing director, and 46 senior officials of the bank in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Chattogram out of malicious motives, said the bank.
EBL states, "In this petition, Eastern Bank was baselessly accused of embezzling Tk11 crore. Reports about the petition were published in various media outlets. This has caused confusion among customers and has severely damaged the image of Eastern Bank. As compensation, Eastern Bank has filed this defamation case against Murtoza Ali."
The bank further states that it is committed to protecting the interests of its customers and its reputation.
