ICT-2 orders exhumation, handover of Abdul’s body to his family, and directs he be recognised as martyr
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has ordered that the body of Abdul — identified through DNA testing in the investigation into the burning deaths of six people in front of Ashulia Police Station on 5 August during the July Uprising — be exhumed and handed over to his family.
The Tribunal has also directed that Abdul be recognised as a martyr and that his name be added to the official list.
The three-member Tribunal-2, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, issued the order today (16 November) following a prosecution application.
According to the investigation report in the crimes against humanity case, around 3pm on 5 August last year, five people were shot dead in front of Ashulia Police Station. Another person, critically injured by a bullet, was also present.
One live person and the five deceased were first loaded onto a van and later onto a police vehicle. The report states that police then set fire to all six individuals in that vehicle, resulting in their deaths.
There are 16 accused in the case.
Eight are currently in custody: former additional superintendent of police of Savar circle Md Shahidul Islam, former additional superintendent of police of Dhaka district Abdullahil Kafi, former inspector of Dhaka District Detective Police (North) Md Arafat Hossain, former sub-inspectors of Ashulia Police Station Abdul Malek, Arafat Uddin, Kamrul Hasan, and Sheikh Afzalul Haque, and former constable Mukul Chokdar.
Among them, Sheikh Afzalul Haque has become an approver (state witness).
