Ctg lawyer Alif murder: Court grants jail gate interrogation for two arrested

A Chattogram court has permitted the police to interrogate two accused — Chandan Das and Rajib Bhattacharya — in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif at jail gate for one day.
Chattogram's Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostofa issued the order following a request from Investigating Officer Mahfuzur Rahman this morning (17 March).
The two accused were produced in court during the hearing, Assistant Public Prosecutor Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury confirmed to The Business Standard.
The court approved a one-day jail gate interrogation of the two accused, he said.
According to court officials, Chandan Das mentioned a person named Shiva in his statement regarding the murder, while Rajib Bhattacharya named Ombai.
The investigating officer sought additional information on these individuals, prompting the need for further questioning.
Lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was murdered during violent clashes in Chattogram on 25 November last year. The violence erupted following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON leader and spokesperson for the Sanatani Jagaran Jote, in a sedition case filed at Kotwali police station.
Chinmoy was arrested by Detective Branch (DB) police at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and later produced in a Chattogram court the next day.
As the court denied his bail plea and ordered his detention, his followers staged protests outside the court premises, leading to hours of confrontation with law enforcement.
The situation escalated as police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) used batons and sound grenades to disperse the demonstrators. The unrest spread from Laldighi Par to Kotwali, during which lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was brutally hacked to death in front of Rangam Convention Hall.
Following the murder, Saiful's father, Jamal Uddin, filed a case naming 31 individuals. So far, 21 people have been arrested in connection with the killing. The Chattogram Lawyers' Association has repeatedly accused ISKCON members and their supporters of being responsible for the attack.
