Court orders virtual hearings for militants, high-risk criminals

In a significant move aimed at enhancing security and efficiency, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court has ordered that trials of militants, dangerous criminals, and politically charged offenders be conducted virtually, without physically bringing them to court.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mustafizur Rahman issued the order today (6 August), citing security risks and logistic challenges.

Confirming the development, Additional Public Prosecutor Mohammad Shamsuddoha Suman said, "From now on, high-risk accused, including militants and top-tier criminals, will no longer be transported to court. Their hearings will be held virtually while they remain in jail."

He added that this initiative would not only save government time and money but also significantly reduce the risks associated with transporting high-profile detainees.

The official order signed by the magistrate states that numerous high-profile and sensitive cases are pending in various courts under the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate. Accused persons — often militants, dangerous terrorists, and individuals involved in political crimes and corruption — are brought daily from Kashimpur High Security Jail and Keraniganj Central Jail under heavy escort.

"Such movements frequently raise serious security concerns, and the presence of these accused individuals in court often draws strong public reactions, with citizens attempting to confront them at court premises.Law enforcement agencies face considerable pressure in managing these situations. 

"In light of this, and in accordance with directives issued by the High Court regarding digital court proceedings, Court No. 28 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court has been equipped as a fully functional digital courtroom to facilitate virtual hearings," reads the order.
