Court orders seizure of ex-JU VC Farzana's tax records

A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of income tax records of former vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, Farzana Islam and her husband, Akhtar Hossain, in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation.
The order was issued today (7 May) by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz following a hearing on a petition submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), confirmed court bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain.
ACC Assistant Director and investigating officer Khorshed Alam filed the application seeking access to and possible seizure of the couple's tax-related documents.
In its petition, the ACC stated that it is investigating allegations of large-scale corruption involving Farzana Islam.
The allegations include claims that recruitment-related irregularities involving millions of taka were carried out through her husband, son, and other associates.
The commission further alleged that Farzana Islam, her husband, and son Protik Tasdik Hossain may have used illegal income to purchase agricultural land, flats, and plots, while also concealing significant amounts of unlawfully acquired assets.
Earlier, on 8 February, the same court imposed a travel ban on Farzana Islam, her husband, and their son as part of the ongoing investigation.
