Court orders passport block on ex-councillor Bappi over ‘role’ in Hadi murder plot

A Dhaka court has ordered to block the passport of former councillor Md Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi after his name surfaced in an investigation as an alleged planner in the attempted murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Fayez issued the order today (2 April), following a petition filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Court bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain confirmed the matter.
According to court sources, the petition was submitted by CID Inspector Md Sohel Rana, seeking restrictions on the accused's foreign travel to ensure proper investigation of the case.
In the application, the CID stated that Md Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi has been found involved in various criminal activities during the course of the investigation.
These include illegally establishing brick kilns, forging documents, fraud, extortion and laundering Tk251crore.
A case under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, was filed against the accused at Pallabi Police Station on 5 March, the petition added.
According to investigators, Bappi's name came up as an alleged planner in the case related to the attempted killing of Hadi.
The investigation into the case is ongoing.
Investigators informed the court that the accused is currently absconding and may attempt to leave the country at any time to evade arrest.
Therefore, the CID requested the court to issue necessary orders to prevent his leaving the country.
Considering the appeal, the court directed that instructions be sent to the Special Branch of police, particularly the immigration authorities, to block the passport of the accused and assist in his arrest.
