Court issues arrest warrants in two July murder cases, Hasina, Quader, Kamal among accused
Arrest warrants have been issued for 41 people across two murder cases, with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former ministers Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal named in both.
A Dhaka court has ordered the issuance of arrest warrants against absconding accused in two separate murder cases filed over killings during the July Uprising in Mohammadpur, including Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who are named in both cases.
Today (26 January), the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam took cognisance of charge sheets submitted in the two cases, which together name 64 accused.
As a large number of them remain absconding, the court ordered arrest warrants in both cases, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman confirmed.
He said the court accepted charge sheets in the two murder cases and subsequently issued arrest warrants against the absconding accused in each case.
Arrest warrants were issued against 21 accused in the Md Sabuj murder case and against 20 accused in the Md Hossain murder case.
At least three absconding accused – former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former ministers Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal – are named in both cases.
According to the charge sheet in the Md Hossain murder case, freight truck driver Md Hossain was shot dead in Mohammadpur on 19 July 2024.
Following the incident, his mother, Mst Rina Begum, filed a case at Mohammadpur Police Station on 31 August 2024, naming 16 accused, including Sheikh Hasina.
After investigation, Sub-Inspector Md Akramuzzaman submitted a charge sheet on 23 November against 34 accused. Of them, 20 are currently absconding, and arrest warrants have been issued accordingly.

Four accused, including former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak and former lawmaker Sadek Khan, are currently in jail, while 10 others are out on bail.
In the Md Sabuj murder case, the charge sheet states that 22-year-old CNG driver Md Sabuj was shot on 4 August 2024 in front of Mayur Villa in Mohammadpur. He was later declared dead at hospital.
His brother, Md Monir Hossain, filed a case at Mohammadpur Police Station on 1 September 2024. After completing the investigation, Sub-Inspector Md Mazharul Islam submitted a charge sheet on 27 November against 30 accused, including Sheikh Hasina.

Of the accused named in the Sabuj murder case, 21 are currently absconding, prompting the court to issue arrest warrants.
