Chief justice seeks written explanations from 3 HC judges over granting high number of bails
The development comes after Law Adviser Asif Nazrul expressed concern over a High Court bench reportedly granting bail in nearly 800 cases within 4 to 5 hours
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has sought written explanations from three High Court judges regarding granting an unusually high number of bails in the vacation bench during the Supreme Court's recess.
The judges have been instructed to provide case-specific explanations and submit lists of the lawyers who represented the accused in the respective bail petitions by today (28 October), said Supreme Court Special Officer Muajjem Hussain.
They were previously given a three-day deadline, which expired yesterday (27 October).
According to court sources, the directive was conveyed by Muajjem Hussain via WhatsApp to Justices Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman, Mustafa Zaman Islam and Md Zakir Hossain on 24 October. All three judges, previously assigned to two-member benches that issued the bail orders, are now serving as single-member bench judges.
The development comes after Law Adviser Asif Nazrul expressed concern over a High Court bench reportedly granting bail in nearly 800 cases within 4 to 5 hours.
One of the judges has since requested a 12-day extension through a letter to the Registrar General's Office.
When asked whether the judges had already met the chief justice or submitted their reports, Muajjem Hussain said he had no information and declined to comment further. He had earlier told this correspondent that no such explanation had been sought from the judges regarding the large volume of bail disposals.
