Appellate Division upholds ex-CJ Khairul’s bail in two murder cases
Police arrested Khairul Haque from his Dhanmondi residence on 24 July last year.
The Appellate Division's chamber court today (20 May) upheld the High Court bail granted to former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque in two murder cases linked to the anti-discrimination student-public movement.
Chamber Judge Md Rezaul Haque passed the order after the state sought a stay on the High Court order granted on 12 May by the bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kazal and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher.
Senior lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju appeared for Khairul Haque before the chamber court.
Police arrested Khairul Haque from his Dhanmondi residence on 24 July last year. Later, he was detained in connection with the murder case of Jubodal activist Abdul Kaium Ahad, which was reported to the Jatrabari Police Station due to violence during the July movement.
Besides the murder cases, Khairul Haque faces four more cases, including allegations of forgery related to the caretaker government verdict and a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission over alleged plot-related forgery.
After lower courts denied him bail in those cases, he moved the High Court, which granted bail in four cases on 8 March and in the ACC case on 11 March. The Appellate Division later rejected the state's plea to stay those bail orders on 28 April.
Khairul Haque was appointed the country's 19th chief justice in September 2010 and retired in May 2011. He later served three terms as chairman of the Law Commission.
