Appellate Division upholds bail for ex-MP Barrister Suman
“Since there are six more cases against him, there is no possibility of his release from prison right now,” said Suman’s lawyer Liton Ahmed.
The Appellate Division today (11 May) upheld bail granted by the High Court to former lawmaker Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in an attempted murder case filed at Mirpur Model Police Station over violence during the July Uprising.
A bench led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam passed the order.
Lawyer M Liton Ahmed appeared in support of the bail petition.
Suman, a former member of parliament for Habiganj-4, was granted bail by the High Court on 3 May in the case.
The state later sought a stay on the bail order. The petition was first placed before the chamber court and was subsequently sent to the Appellate Division for hearing.
Senior lawyer Md Monsurul Haque Chowdhury appeared for Suman, assisted by lawyer Liton Ahmed.
Additional Attorney General Aneek R Haque represented the state.
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, lawyer Liton Ahmed said, "The Appellate Division has disposed of the state's petition challenging the bail granted by the High Court. As a result, Suman's bail in the attempted murder case remains in force.
"Since there are six more cases against him, there is no possibility of his release from prison right now."
The case was filed on 23 September 2024 at Mirpur Model Police Station by Hridoy Mia, who accused Suman of attempted murder by gunfire during the July Uprising.
Hridoy Mia is the senior vice-president of the Jubo Dal in No 10 Hatiain union in Madhabpur, Habiganj.
Following the student-led mass uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August 2024, more than 70 people, including former ministers, members of parliament, government officials, police personnel and journalists, were arrested.
Syed Sayedul Haque Suman was arrested on 22 October that year.
He is facing a total of seven cases.
In the last national parliamentary election, Suman won the Habiganj-4 (Chunarughat-Madhabpur) seat as an independent candidate.
