The Appellate Division has stayed the anticipatory bail granted by the High Court to Suparna Sur Chowdhury, the wife of former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Sitangshu Kumar (SK) Sur Chowdhury, and their daughter Nandita Sur Chowdhury in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for failing to submit wealth statements within the stipulated time.

The bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam today (24 February) issued the order following a state petition seeking a stay on the High Court's bail order.

Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Mizanur Rahman represented the accused, while Advocate Asif Hossain appeared for the ACC.

On 9 February, the High Court granted anticipatory bail to Suparna and Nandita Sur Chowdhury. The state later appealed to the Appellate Division, requesting a stay on the order.

The ACC filed the case against SK Sur, his wife Suparna, and their daughter Nandita on 22 December last year under Section 26 (2) of the ACC Act 2004 for failing to submit their wealth statements within the required timeframe.

Following the filing of the case, ACC Deputy Director Md Aktarul Islam told the media that the accused had been charged with non-compliance with the law.

Earlier, in August 2022, the ACC had sought information from banks and financial institutions regarding all types of transactions made by the family.
