Anisul Huq, Helal Uddin shown arrested in separate cases

A Dhaka court has ordered former law minister Anisul Huq and former election commission secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed to be shown arrested in separate cases today (18 August).

Anisul Huq has been shown arrested in two cases filed over the killing of electrician Mohammad Shawon Sikder and the attempted murder of Ashraful alias Fahin in Lalbagh during last year's July uprising. The petitions were submitted by Sub-Inspector (SI) Abul Farej Jewel, the investigation officer of the cases.
According to the case statement, Shawon was shot dead on 19 July last year in front of Eden College while returning home during the protests. Later, on 21 January, Iqbal Mojumdar Touhid filed a case with Lalbagh police station against Sheikh Hasina and 40 others.
In another case, Ashraful alleged he was shot during the protests on 18 July inside Azimpur government colony and later filed a case on 25 May against Sheikh Hasina and 130 others.
Meanwhile, Helal Uddin was shown arrested in a case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on charges of fraudulent elections and treason. The petition was filed by Police Bureau of Investigation inspector Syed Sazedur Rahman.
BNP leader Md Salah Uddin Khan filed the case on 22 June accusing three former chief election commissioners and 24 others of manipulating the 10th to 12th parliamentary elections. On 25 June, charges of treason, fraud and embezzlement were added.
Anisul and Helal were produced before the court during the hearing. After the hearing, the court granted the petitions to show them arrested, confirmed state counsel Shamsuddoha Suman.
