Alesha Mart chairman, wife sentenced to four years in jail in fraud case

A Dhaka court has sentenced Alesha Mart Chairman Manjur Alam Sikder and his wife Sadia Chowdhury to four years in prison in a case filed over breach of trust and fraud.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman delivered the verdict today (21 July).
In addition to the sentence, the couple will face another three months in jail if they fail to pay the court-ordered compensation.
As both convicts are currently absconding, the court also issued arrest and sentence warrants against them.
According to court documents, on 15 August 2021, the plaintiff, Ala Uddin Hossain, ordered three motorcycles from Alesha Mart for Tk3,24,481 under a promotional offer. When the delivery was delayed, he demanded a refund. The accused later issued a cheque dated 21 April 2022 which bounced due to insufficient funds.
Despite sending a legal notice, the issue remained unresolved, prompting Hossain to file a case on 4 August 2022, naming both Manjur Alam and Sadia Chowdhury as defendants.
The court framed charges on 15 December last year and recorded testimonies from two witnesses during the trial.
Earlier on 25 January last year, the same couple was sentenced to six months in prison in a separate cheque bounce case.
