ACC approves cases against journalist Naem Nizam, wife over alleged illegal assets, money laundering
The ACC says Nizam and his wife acquired Tk4.82 crore in assets beyond their known sources of income and conducted Tk60.48 crore in transactions through 36 bank accounts.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved separate cases against former Bangladesh Pratidin editor Naem Nizam and his wife, former reserved seat lawmaker Farida Yasmin, over allegations of acquiring assets beyond their known sources of income and money laundering.
ACC Secretary Md Saidur Rahman Khan disclosed the matter at a press briefing today (23 September).
According to ACC documents, Naem Nizam is accused of acquiring and possessing assets worth Tk2.08 crore beyond his known sources of income. The commission also found transactions totalling Tk39.39 crore in 19 bank accounts operated in the names of organisations linked to his interests.

The money was converted, transferred and moved to conceal or disguise its illegal source, allegedly derived from corruption and bribery.
The commission approved a case against Naem under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
Meanwhile, Naem's wife, Farida Yasmin, is accused of abusing her position to acquire and possess assets worth Tk2.74 crore beyond her known sources of income.
The ACC also found transactions totalling Tk21.09 crore in 17 bank accounts operated in the names of organisations linked to her interests.
The money was converted, transferred and moved to conceal or disguise its illegal source, which the ACC says was obtained through bribery and corruption.
The commission approved a case against Farida under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, and Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
Earlier, on 8 March, a Dhaka court ordered the freezing of 22 bank accounts belonging to Naem Nizam, Farida Yasmin, their son Mahir Abrar, and daughter Nujhat Purnata.
