5 ex-Janata Bank officials jailed for 8 years over Tk3.39 crore embezzlement
The convicts are Md Abu Tayeb, Babul Chandra Majumdar, Ranendra Bikash Saha and Moslem Uddin, Md Sayeed Hossain.
A Chattogram court has sentenced five former officials of Janata Bank to eight years' imprisonment, each, in a case over embezzling Tk3.39 crore from its Syed Waliullah Road Branch.
The verdict was delivered yesterday (10 May) by the court of Divisional Special Judge of Chattogram Mizanur Rahman Khan, following a trial.
The convicts are Md Abu Tayeb, Babul Chandra Majumdar, Ranendra Bikash Saha and Moslem Uddin, Md Sayeed Hossain.
Confirming the matter, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Prosecutor Md Enamul Islam said the court delivered the verdict after examining testimonies from 12 witnesses.
The five were convicted under three separate charges, he added.
In addition to the prison terms, the court also fined each of the convicts Tk46 lakh, with a further one-year jail term in default of payment.
None of the convicts were present in court during the pronouncement of the verdict. As they remain absconding, the court ordered the issuance of arrest warrants against them.
The court, however, acquitted another former official of Janata Bank Nurul Huda.
According to the case details, between 1 January 1999 and 29 March 2000, a total of Tk3.39 crore was embezzled from the branch through fraudulent activities.
The case was filed on 6 April 2000 with Double Mooring Police Station by the bank's then deputy general manager Md Abul Kasem Mia.
Following an investigation, a charge sheet was submitted in 2011 and trial proceedings formally began in 2013 after charges were framed against the accused.
