5 August Chankharpul killings: ICT fixes 29 June for hearing on charges framed

The International Crimes Tribunal has set Sunday (29 June) as the date for a hearing on the charges framed in a case filed over the killing of six people in Dhaka's Chankharpul on 5 August last year during the July uprising.
This marks the first step in the formal trial process of a case related to the 2024 mass killings.
Today (22 June), a three-member bench of the International Crimes Tribunal, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mojumder, fixed the date following a petition submitted by the prosecution.
At the same time, the tribunal ordered the appointment of a state defense lawyer for the four accused who are currently on the run, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman.
On the same day, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim represented the prosecution during the hearing.
Earlier on 3 June, the tribunal had instructed releasing a public notice seeking appearance before the court from the four fugitives accused. Since they failed to do so, the tribunal issued its order accordingly.
The individuals named in the notice are former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakrabarti, former additional deputy commissioner of Ramna Division Shah Alam Akhtarul Islam, and former assistant commissioner of Ramna Division Mohammad Imrul.
Earlier this morning, four accused currently in custody were brought before the tribunal. They are former OC of Shahbag Police Station Arshad Hossain, along with constables Sujon Mia, Imaaz Hossain Imon, and Nasirul Islam.
