5 Aug Chankharpul killings: Verdict by ICT tomorrow, BTV to broadcast live

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) will deliver its verdict tomorrow (20 January) in the case concerning the killing of six people by police gunfire at Chankharpul in Dhaka on 5 August 2024, the day the Awami League government fell following the mass uprising.
The proceedings will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said today (19 January), adding the verdict will be the second issued by the reconstituted tribunal.
The tribunal will pronounce the judgment against eight individuals, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman.
The tribunal fixed 20 January for the verdict after arguments from both sides concluded. On 24 December, the three-member bench of ICT-1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, scheduled the date.
On the day arguments ended, lawyer Md Ziaur Rashid presented submissions on behalf of the accused Imaz Hossain Emon, while state defence lawyer Kutubuddin Ahmed argued for the four fugitive accused.
Prosecutor Mizanul Islam later presented counter-arguments for the prosecution, assisted by Prosecutors Sahidul Islam, Abdullah Al Noman and others.
The four arrested accused in the case are former inspector (operations) of Shahbagh Police Station Md Arshad Hossain, constable Md Sujan Mia, Md Imaz Hossain Emon and Md Nasirul Islam.
The four fugitive accused are former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former joint commissioner of DMP Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former additional deputy commissioner of Ramna Zone Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam and former assistant commissioner of Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul.
Charges against all eight individuals were framed on 14 July 2025, after which the court ordered the commencement of the trial.
The case relates to the police firing on students and members of the public at Chankharpul on 5 August 2024.
Six people—Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Junaid, Md Yaqub, Md Rakib Hawladar, Md Ismamul Haque and Manik Mia Shahriar—were killed in the incident, and many others were injured.
