Nassa Group chairman Nazrul shown arrested in July Uprising attempted murder case
According to the investigating officer, Nazrul instructed co-accused to open fire with the intention of killing the victim and provided financial assistance.
Nazrul Islam Mazumder, chairman of Nassa Group, has been shown arrested in a case over the attempted murder of a rickshaw-van driver during the July Uprising in Dhaka's Gulshan in 2024.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order today (24 August) following an application by the investigating officer.
Advocate Mahfuza Akter, who represented Nazrul, confirmed the matter.
On 18 August, Sub-Inspector Md Abdus Salam of Gulshan Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, filed an application seeking to show Nazrul arrested in the case. The court then set today for a hearing in the presence of the accused.
According to the application, the investigation found that Nazrul had given instructions to suppress demonstrators during the July Movement and spent money allegedly obtained through corruption and money laundering for this purpose.
The application also said the initial investigation had found evidence that Nazrul instructed co-accused to open fire with the intention of killing the victim and provided financial assistance.
The investigating officer said showing Nazrul arrested in the case was necessary for a fair and impartial investigation. The court subsequently granted the application.
According to the case documents, protesters were demonstrating in front of Confidence Tower in Gulshan's Shahjadpur area on 19 July 2024 during the anti-discrimination movement when police and Awami League leaders and activists opened fire.
Jabbar Ali Howlader, a rickshaw-van driver, was shot during the incident, according to the allegations.
Jabbar later filed an attempted murder case with Gulshan Police Station on 11 December 2024. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 109 others were named as accused in the case.
Nazrul, a former chairman of Exim Bank, was arrested by a Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch team in Gulshan on the night of 1 October 2024 and has remained in jail since then.
