3 accused remanded over killing of former Swecchasebak Dal leader
Defence lawyer sought bail and opposed the remand request.
A Dhaka court today (11 June) placed three accused on a one-day remand each in a case filed over the stabbing of Billal Hossain Talukder, former convener of Ramna Thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, in the capital's Mouchak area.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid issued the order following a petition submitted by police, Sub-Inspector Shah Alam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division confirmed the matter.
The accused are recently expelled Jubo Dal General Secretary of Ramna Thana unit Lutfor Rahman alias Lutfor Rahman Patwari, Joint Convener Rezaul Karim, and Istiaq Ali Rakib alias Goldel Rakib, team leader of Ward No 19 (Ramna) Chhatra Dal.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the three accused in Dhaka and Lakshmipur last night. The investigation officer Inspector Atikul Alam Khandaker produced them before the court and sought seven days' remand for questioning today.
Defence lawyer Monir Hossain Sumon sought bail and opposed the remand request, while the prosecution argued opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted one-day remand for the three accused.
Earlier yesterday, two other accused in the case were also placed on remand.
According to the case statement, Billal Hossain operated a business at Arafat Market in the Ramna area and had been involved in a long-standing dispute with several individuals, including Didarul Islam Babu, over alleged extortion from local traders.
On 8 June at around 7:30pm, Didarul called Billal to a mediation meeting behind Arafat Market, where a group of accused surrounded and attacked him.
The attackers beat Billal indiscriminately before Didarul and his associates struck him with iron rods, cricket stumps and sharp weapons. It also names Riazul Hasan and Al Amin Mahin among those accused of taking part in the assault.
At one stage, Didarul allegedly stabbed Billal in the chest, leaving him critically injured. He was taken to Islami Bank Hospital by locals and later declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, Billal's wife, Asiya Khatun, filed a murder case with Ramna Model Police Station, naming Didarul Islam Babu and 20 others as accused.
