A Brahmanbaria court has sentenced 21 people, including Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir activists, to two years in prison for setting fire to a police vehicle in Brahmanbaria.

The verdict was announced by Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate Masud Parvez on Sunday noon.

Eight of the accused were present when the verdict was announced. The rest are on the run.

Each of the convicts has been fined Tk2,000; in default, they have to suffer one more month each in jail.

According to court sources, a police food-laden truck was set on fire in Pirbari area of ​​Brahmanbaria town on 4 December 2012 during a strike. The police filed a case against 22 more people, mentioning the names of 13 people following the incident.

Later, the investigating officer of the case, Atiqur Rahman submitted a charge sheet against 21 people.

Brahmanbaria Court Officer-in-Charge Didarul Alam said the seven accused have been sent to jail after the verdict was announced. Warrent will be issued agaisnt the rest of the accused who are on the run.
